The government wants to make intensive English courses optional in elementary schools and Marie Malavoy has gone a step further by arguing that young people should first learn French correctly before being immersed in a second language. Équipe autonomiste proposes, in its program, that English immersion should begin in Grade 1, when a child’s mind is still malleable and can easily absorb what is being taught. Équipe autonomiste feels young people don’t know French correctly because they’re being educated incorrectly. It may be time to ask for some answers from the Department of Education, Recreation and Sports, which is so devoted to planning school programs.
