Proposal 51 : Divide welfare into two categories: those who are able to work and those who are not.
Divide welfare into two categories: those who are able to work and those who are not.
The ‘disabled’ will receive a ‘disability benefit’ that will enable them to live suitably. The ‘able-bodied’ will have to show that they are truly looking for work or are seriously taking a training course to become employable in order to remain eligible for assistance. They will not be entitled to the same privileges as the disabled. It is wrong that able-bodied welfare recipients should enjoy free services that cannot be afforded by people who work full-time at the minimum wage. In addition, the regular amount of assistance will be time-limited. After a certain period, assistance will be reduced to a minimum subsistence level.
