Proposal 54 : Review the operating costs of prisons and certain benefits given to prisoners.

Review the operating costs of prisons and certain benefits given to prisoners.

It seems unfair that some prisoners can enjoy material benefits that people who work at the minimum wage cannot afford without much effort. Prisoners should contribute to paying what they cost society.

Proposal 50 : Add ‘Men’ to the five designated groups in the Act respecting Equal Access to Employment in Public Bodies.

Add ‘Men’ to the five designated groups in the Act respecting Equal Access to Employment in Public Bodies.

Men were not included as a group in this anti-discrimination act because they were not being discriminated against when it was passed (men were in the majority everywhere). Because men are not a designated group under the Act, we cannot verify whether they are underrepresented or compare their numbers with the numbers of male candidates available, yet in reality men are now a minority in several employment categories.

Proposal 49 : Adjust the basic personal credit above which an individual pays taxes on the number of hours worked.

Adjust the basic personal credit above which an individual pays taxes on the number of hours worked.

Currently, this credit is set at 2,000 hours of work. From now on, if a worker does more than 2,000 hours of work per year, he or she may increase this basic personal credit in proportion to the amount of overtime he or she has done.

Proposal 48 : Reduce the number of construction competency cards.

Reduce the number of construction competency cards.

The aim is to ensure that the same person can build a wall, lay the gypsum board, treat the joints, and do the painting. In Ontario, there are only 6 construction trades. Québec will adjust its rules to those of its Canadian neighbour.

Proposal 47 : Require that unions make public their financial statements, which must be audited by a chartered accountant.

Require that unions make public their financial statements, which must be audited by a chartered accountant.

A union is here considered to be a group of workers within a business and not a group of union leaders. The workers own their union and must have access to the financial statements.

Proposal 44 : Prohibit publishing of polls during the last week of the election campaign.

Prohibit publishing of polls during the last week of the election campaign.

The aim is to encourage people to inform themselves and vote for the candidate or party that best meets their expectations, instead of voting strategically. People must be given a chance to make up their minds because voting is a personal responsibility.

Proposal 43 : Hold general elections at fixed intervals.

Hold general elections at fixed intervals.

When a majority government comes to power, the next election will be held 5 years later.
